Purple Aurora, Northern Lights The majority of auroral displays are seen as green. Purples and blues are seen less frequently and they tend to appear when solar activity is high. When solar particles collide with our atmosphere at an altitude of 60 miles or we can see purple and blue most commonly towards the lower parts of the display caused by Nitrogen.
